Frequently Asked Question
How do I submit an assignment in Canvas?
Last Updated 25 days ago
Most coursework in Canvas is turned in as an assignment. This guide covers uploading a file, typing a text entry, resubmitting, and confirming your work actually went through.
To open the assignment:
- Sign in to Canvas at https://jerseycollege.instructure.com/login/ldap and click the course from your Dashboard.
- In the course menu, click Assignments (or click the assignment link in a Module or your To Do list).
- Click the assignment name to open it, then read the instructions and check the Due date and the points.
- Click the "Start Assignment" button (it may also read "Submit Assignment").
To submit a file (File Upload):
- Make sure the "File Upload" tab is selected.
- Click "Choose File" (or "Browse") and find the file on your device.
- Select your file. Tip: save your work as a PDF or Word document unless your instructor asks for a different format.
- To add more than one file, click "Add Another File" and repeat.
- Click "Submit Assignment."
To submit typed work (Text Entry):
- Click the "Text Entry" tab.
- Type or paste your answer into the box. You can use the toolbar to format the text.
- Click "Submit Assignment."
To confirm your submission went through:
- After submitting, look for a confirmation. Canvas shows a "Submitted!" message with the date and time on the right side of the assignment page.
- You can also click Grades in the course; a submitted assignment shows a submission icon next to it.
- For extra peace of mind, if your notifications are turned on, check your Canvas Inbox or email for a submission confirmation.
To resubmit (turn in a new version):
- Open the same assignment again.
- Click "New Attempt" (it may also read "Re-submit Assignment").
- Upload the corrected file or edit your text, then click "Submit Assignment" again.
- Your newest submission is the one your instructor grades, but they can usually still see earlier attempts. Resubmitting is only allowed until the assignment closes; after the due date or lock date, the button may disappear.
Tips and warnings:
- Submit early. Don't wait until the last minute, in case your internet, file, or upload is slow.
- If the "Submit" button is greyed out or missing, the assignment may be past due or locked, may require a specific file type, or may be set up to be turned in a different way (such as on paper or in another tool). Check the instructions or ask your instructor.
- If a file won't upload, confirm it isn't too large, isn't still open in another program, and is an allowed file type.
- Always look for the "Submitted!" confirmation. If you don't see it, your work may not have gone through.
