How do I get started with Microsoft Teams for my classes and meetings?

Microsoft Teams comes free with your Jersey College Microsoft 365 account and is used for some classes, group work, and meetings. This guide shows you how to open Teams, find your team, chat, and join a meeting.

Open and sign in to Teams:

  1. You can use Teams two ways: in a web browser at https://teams.microsoft.com, or by installing the Teams app on your computer or phone. For the app, download it from https://office.com (Install apps) or your phone's app store.
  1. Sign in with your full Jersey College email (firstname.lastname@jerseycollege.edu) and password.
  1. If you are asked to verify your identity, open Microsoft Authenticator on your phone and enter the 6-digit code it shows for your Jersey College account.

Find your class team:

  1. On the left side of Teams, click "Teams". You will see any teams you have already been added to.
  1. If you do not see a class you expect, ask your instructor to add you, or check for a join link or code they may have shared.

Chat with a classmate or instructor:

  1. On the left side, click "Chat".
  1. Click the "New chat" icon (a pencil or pen at the top).
  1. Type the person's name or full email address, select them, type your message at the bottom, and press Enter to send.

Join a meeting or online class:

  1. If you received a meeting link by email or in a chat, simply click "Join" or the meeting link at the scheduled time.
  1. To find scheduled meetings inside Teams, click "Calendar" on the left, find the meeting, and click "Join".
  1. Before you enter, choose whether your camera and microphone are on or off, then click "Join now".
  1. Use the toolbar during the meeting to mute/unmute your microphone, turn your camera on or off, raise your hand, or open the chat. Click "Leave" when the meeting is over.

Tips:

  • Join a couple of minutes early the first time so you can test your microphone and camera.
  • A headset or earbuds reduces echo and background noise during class.
  • If your audio or video does not work in the browser, try the installed Teams app instead, and make sure your browser or device has permission to use your microphone and camera.
  • Some Jersey College classes and meetings use Zoom instead of Teams; check your course details to know which one your instructor uses.
