Canvas isn't loading, pages look broken, or I'm not getting notifications - how to fix it
Last Updated 25 days ago

If Canvas pages won't load, look broken or blank, or your notifications stopped coming through, the fixes below solve most issues. Try them in order.

Use a supported browser

  1. Open Canvas in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Mozilla Firefox. These work best with Canvas.
  1. Make sure your browser is up to date. Open the browser menu (three dots or lines), look under Help or Settings for "About" to check for and install updates, then restart the browser.
  1. Go to the Canvas sign-in page at jerseycollege.instructure.com/login/ldap, sign in with your Jersey College credentials, and see if the problem is gone.

Refresh and clear the cache

  1. First, try a hard refresh of the page: press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows (or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac) to reload it fresh.

2. If pages still look broken, clear your browser cache:
- In the browser menu, open Settings, then find "Privacy and security."
- Choose "Clear browsing data."
- Select "Cached images and files" (and "Cookies and other site data" if needed), then clear it.

  1. Close the browser completely, reopen it, and sign back in to Canvas.

Try an incognito or private window

  1. Open a private window: in Chrome or Edge press Ctrl+Shift+N; in Firefox press Ctrl+Shift+P.
  1. Go to jerseycollege.instructure.com/login/ldap and sign in. If Canvas works here, the problem is usually a browser extension or old saved data, so clearing the cache (above) or disabling extensions should fix it.

Other quick checks

  1. Turn off browser extensions or ad blockers temporarily, since these can block parts of a Canvas page.
  1. Check your internet connection, and if you are on campus, make sure you are connected to the campus Wi-Fi.
  1. Try a different browser or a different device to confirm whether the issue follows you.

If you're not getting notifications

  1. Check your Canvas notification settings on the website: click Account (your profile picture), then Notifications, and turn on the alerts you want, such as announcements, due dates, and grades.
  1. Make sure messages aren't landing in your Junk or Spam folder. Mark any Canvas email as "not junk" so future ones arrive in your inbox.
  1. On the Canvas Student mobile app, tap the menu or your profile picture, open Settings or Notification Preferences, and turn on the alerts you want.
  1. For mobile push notifications, also open your phone's own Settings, find the Canvas Student app, and allow Notifications there.

Tips

  • If you just changed your password, give Canvas about 5 to 10 minutes to sync before trying again.
  • A quick sign out and sign back in clears up many display and login glitches.
