Tips for a smooth online class
Last Updated 25 days ago
Online classes go a lot better with a little setup ahead of time. These simple tips help you stay connected, hear clearly, and avoid the most common problems during a Zoom class.
Before class:
- Use the most reliable internet you can. A wired (Ethernet) connection is best. If you're on Wi-Fi, sit close to your router and avoid streaming video, large downloads, or online games on other devices during class.
- Use a headset with a microphone if you have one. Earbuds or a headset give you much clearer sound than your computer's built-in speakers and microphone, and they stop echo for everyone.
- Find a quiet, well-lit space. Pick a spot with little background noise and good lighting on your face (a window or lamp in front of you, not behind you) so your instructor and classmates can see and hear you.
- Keep your apps updated. Open Zoom a day ahead and let it install any updates, and install pending Windows Updates too. Updates often fix camera, microphone, and connection problems.
- Charge your device or plug it in. A laptop that dies mid-class is one of the most common interruptions.
When class starts:
- Join a few minutes early. This gives you time to fix any camera, microphone, or audio issue before the lesson begins instead of during it.
- Test your camera and microphone. Most meeting tools let you preview your video and do a quick audio test when you join.
- Mute your microphone when you're not speaking. This cuts out background noise for everyone and is good online etiquette. Unmute only when you want to talk.
- Close apps you don't need. Shutting extra browser tabs and programs frees up your device and connection so video stays smooth.
Helpful tips:
- If your video gets choppy or audio breaks up, turn your camera off for a bit. Audio uses much less internet than video and will usually clear up.
- If you get disconnected, simply rejoin using the same link. It's normal and usually quick.
- Have your phone handy as a backup. Many classes can also be joined from the Zoom mobile app if your computer has trouble.
