Schedule and host your own Zoom meeting (study groups and group projects)
Last Updated 25 days ago

You can create your own Zoom meeting to study with classmates or work on a group project. This guide shows you how to schedule a meeting, invite people, and use the basic host controls. You'll need a Zoom account, which you can create for free at the Zoom website or in the Zoom app.

Schedule a meeting (Zoom desktop app):

  1. Open the Zoom app and sign in.
  1. On the Home tab, click Schedule.
  1. Give your meeting a topic (for example, "NUR 101 Study Group"), then set the date, start time, and duration.
  1. Choose any options you want, such as requiring a passcode or turning on the waiting room. These help keep uninvited people out.
  1. Click Save. Zoom creates the meeting and shows you the join link and details.

Invite people:

  1. After saving, click Copy Invitation (or find the meeting under the Meetings tab and choose Copy Invitation).
  1. Paste the invitation into an email, a text, or a group chat and send it to your classmates.
  1. To invite people once the meeting has already started, click Participants at the bottom, then Invite, and share or copy the link.

Start and host the meeting:

  1. At your meeting time, open Zoom, go to the Meetings tab, find your meeting, and click Start.
  1. If you turned on the waiting room, you'll see people waiting to join. Click Admit next to each person, or Admit All.

Basic host controls (along the bottom of the Zoom window):

  • Mute / Unmute and Start / Stop Video control your own microphone and camera.
  • Participants shows everyone in the meeting. As host you can mute a noisy participant or remove someone if needed.
  • Share Screen lets you (or others) show a document or presentation to the group.
  • Chat opens a text chat where you can share links and messages.
  • Record lets you record the session (let everyone know first, and only record with their okay).
  • End ends the meeting. Choose End Meeting for All when you're finished.

Helpful tips:

  • Free Zoom accounts limit meetings to about 40 minutes. If you run out of time, just start the meeting again and rejoin, or schedule a fresh one.
  • Keep the passcode or waiting room turned on so only your invited classmates can get in.
  • This is for your own study groups and projects. For official Jersey College classes, always use the Zoom link your instructor provides.
