Frequently Asked Question
Allow or block pop-ups and manage camera/microphone permissions for a site (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox)
Last Updated 25 days ago
Some Jersey College tools open content in a pop-up window, and online classes need permission to use your camera and microphone. If a pop-up is blocked or your camera/mic won't turn on, use these steps to allow (or block) them for a specific website. The fastest way to fix a single site is to click the icon at the left end of the address bar while you are on that site.
Google Chrome
- Go to the website you are having trouble with.
- Click the icon at the left end of the address bar (a tune/sliders icon, or the site name).
- Click "Site settings."
- Find "Pop-ups and redirects," "Camera," or "Microphone" and set each to "Allow" (or "Block").
- To manage pop-ups for all sites: three dots, then Settings, then "Privacy and security," then "Site settings," then "Pop-ups and redirects."
- Reload the page for the change to take effect.
Microsoft Edge
- Go to the website you are having trouble with.
- Click the icon at the left end of the address bar (a lock or sliders icon, or the site name).
- Click "Permissions for this site."
- Find "Pop-ups and redirects," "Camera," or "Microphone" and set each to "Allow" (or "Block").
- To manage pop-ups for all sites: three dots, then Settings, then "Cookies and site permissions," then "Pop-ups and redirects."
- Reload the page for the change to take effect.
Mozilla Firefox
- Go to the website you are having trouble with.
- Click the icon at the left end of the address bar (a lock or shield/settings icon).
- Open the permissions section and adjust the listed permissions, or remove an existing block here.
- To manage permissions for all sites: three lines, then Settings, then "Privacy & Security," then scroll to "Permissions" (Camera, Microphone, and Pop-up Windows). Click "Settings" next to each to allow or block specific sites.
- To allow a pop-up after it is blocked: when Firefox blocks one, a message bar appears at the top of the page; click "Options" (or "Allow") and choose to allow pop-ups for that site.
- Reload the page for the change to take effect.
Tips
- Only allow pop-ups and camera/microphone access for websites you trust, such as Jersey College sites and your online class tools. Block them for sites you do not recognize.
- If your camera or microphone still won't work in a class, also check that no other app (such as Zoom) is already using it, and that you picked "Allow" when the browser first asked.
- Windows has its own privacy settings too. If the browser shows access is allowed but the device still won't work, check Windows Settings, then "Privacy & security," then Camera and Microphone, and make sure your browser is permitted.
- For camera and microphone problems specifically inside Zoom, see the published article on fixing camera/microphone issues in Zoom.
