Frequently Asked Question

How do I open, read, and print PDFs with Acrobat Reader (and make Reader my default PDF app)?
Last Updated 25 days ago

Once Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed, you can use it to open, read, and print any PDF file. You can also set it as your default PDF program so PDFs always open in Reader. (If you do not have Reader yet, see the article on installing Adobe Acrobat Reader for free.)

Open and read a PDF:

  1. Find the PDF file on your computer (for example, in your Downloads folder or on your desktop).

2. Double-click the file. If Acrobat Reader is your default PDF app, it will open in Reader.
- If it opens somewhere else (like a web browser), right-click the file, choose "Open with," and pick "Adobe Acrobat Reader."

  1. To move through the document, scroll with your mouse wheel or use the up and down arrow keys.
  1. To zoom in or out, use the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons in the toolbar, or hold the Ctrl key (Windows) or Command key (Mac) and scroll.

Print a PDF:

  1. With the PDF open in Acrobat Reader, click the printer icon in the toolbar, or press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (Mac).
  1. In the Print window, choose your printer from the "Printer" drop-down list.

3. Choose what to print:
- "All" prints the whole document.
- "Pages" lets you type a page range, such as 1-3, to print only certain pages.

  1. Set the number of copies if you need more than one.
  1. Click Print.

Make Acrobat Reader your default PDF app (Windows 11):

  1. Right-click any PDF file and choose "Open with," then click "Choose another app."
  1. In the list, click "Adobe Acrobat Reader."
  1. Check the box that says "Always use this app to open .pdf files."
  1. Click OK. From now on, PDFs will open in Acrobat Reader when you double-click them.

Make Acrobat Reader your default PDF app (Mac):

  1. Click once on any PDF file to select it (do not open it).
  1. Go to File, then "Get Info."
  1. In the Info window, find the "Open with" section and choose "Adobe Acrobat Reader" from the drop-down.
  1. Click the "Change All..." button, then confirm. All PDFs will now open in Reader.

Tips:
- If a printed PDF looks cut off, open the Print window and look for a "Fit" or "Shrink oversized pages" option under "Page Sizing & Handling," then try again.
- If you are on a campus computer and the printer you need is not in the list, contact the Help Desk so they can add it for you.
