Frequently Asked Question
Many student and school forms come as PDFs that you can fill in and sign right on your computer using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. You do not need to print, sign by hand, and scan. Here is how to use the Fill & Sign tool. (If you do not have Reader yet, see the article on installing Adobe Acrobat Reader for free.)
Open the form and start Fill & Sign:
- Open the PDF form in Adobe Acrobat Reader (double-click the file, or right-click it, choose "Open with," and pick Adobe Acrobat Reader).
- Look for the "Fill & Sign" tool. You can usually find it on the right-hand panel, or by clicking the "All tools" menu and choosing "Fill & Sign."
Fill in the text:
- If the form has fillable blanks, click directly in a blank and start typing.
- If the form is a flat form with no clickable blanks, click the "Add text" tool (it looks like a small "Ab" or a text box), then click where you want to type and enter your text.
- To move text you have added, click it and drag it into place. To make the text bigger or smaller, click it and use the small "A" (smaller) and large "A" (larger) buttons that appear.
- For checkboxes, use the checkmark or "X" tools in the Fill & Sign toolbar and click where you want the mark to appear.
Add your signature:
- In the Fill & Sign toolbar, click "Sign" (it may look like a pen icon), then click "Add signature."
2. Choose how you want to create your signature:
- Type: type your name and pick a handwriting-style font.
- Draw: draw your signature with your mouse, trackpad, or finger (on a touchscreen).
- Image: upload a picture of your handwritten signature.
- Click Apply.
- Move the signature to the correct spot on the form and click to place it. You can drag it or resize it if needed.
Save the finished form:
- Click File, then "Save As."
- Give the file a clear name (for example, your last name and the form name) and choose where to save it.
- Click Save.
- Submit the saved PDF the way you were asked to (for example, attach it to an email or upload it where your instructor or the school office told you).
Tips and warnings:
- Always use "Save As" and double-check the saved file before you send it, so you do not accidentally send a blank or half-finished form.
- A signature you create in Fill & Sign is fine for most everyday school forms. If a form specifically requires a verified digital signature or notarization, ask the office or instructor who sent it how they want it signed.
- Keep a copy of every signed form for your own records.
