Frequently Asked Question
How do I take a screenshot in Windows 11?
Last Updated 24 days ago
A screenshot is a picture of what's on your screen - handy for showing the Help Desk an error message or sharing something with an instructor. Windows 11 gives you a few easy ways to do it.
Quickest way - the Snipping Tool (lets you grab part of the screen):
- Press the Windows key + Shift + S all at once. Your screen will dim slightly and a small toolbar appears at the top.
- Choose the shape you want from the toolbar: Rectangle (drag a box), Window (capture one window), or Full screen.
- Click and drag to select the area you want, then let go. The screenshot is copied to your clipboard.
- A small preview pops up in the bottom-right corner. Click it to mark up, crop, or save the image.
- To save it: click the Save icon (a floppy disk), choose a folder, type a name, and click Save.
Capture the whole screen at once:
- Press the Windows key + Print Screen (often labeled PrtScn) together. The screen dims for a second.
- The full-screen image is saved automatically to This PC > Pictures > Screenshots.
Copy the screen to paste it somewhere:
- Press the Print Screen (PrtScn) key by itself to copy the whole screen to the clipboard.
- Open where you want it - an email, a Word document, or a chat message.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the image in.
Tips:
- On many laptops you may need to hold the Fn key together with PrtScn for it to work.
- The Windows key is the one with the Windows logo, usually near the bottom-left of the keyboard.
- To attach a screenshot to an email or Help Desk ticket, save it first (Snipping Tool method above), then use the Attach option in your email.
- You can also open the Snipping Tool from the Start menu: click Start, type "Snipping Tool", open it, then click New to start a capture.
