Frequently Asked Question

How do I connect a printer in Windows 11?
Last Updated 24 days ago

Windows 11 makes it easy to add a printer, whether it plugs into your computer with a USB cable or you connect to a shared printer on the campus network. Pick the section that matches your situation.

Connect a USB printer (one that plugs directly into your computer):

  1. Turn the printer on and plug its USB cable into a USB port on your computer.
  2. Wait a minute - Windows usually detects the printer and sets it up automatically.
  3. To confirm it worked: click Start, then Settings (the gear icon), then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners. Your printer should appear in the list.
  4. If it doesn't appear, follow the "Add a printer" steps below.

Add a printer (USB or network):

  1. Click Start, then click Settings (the gear icon).
  2. Click Bluetooth & devices on the left, then click Printers & scanners.
  3. Click "Add device" near the top.
  4. Wait while Windows searches. If your printer appears in the list, click it, then click "Add device" again and follow any on-screen prompts.
  5. When it finishes, the printer shows up in your Printers & scanners list and is ready to use.

If the printer you want isn't found:

  1. On the same screen, look for "The printer that I want isn't listed" and click the "Add manually" button next to it.
  2. To add a campus network printer, you'll need its exact name or address. This is a Jersey College-specific value - contact the Help Desk to get the correct printer name for your location, along with access to it.
  3. Enter the name exactly as the Help Desk provides it, then click Next and follow the prompts.

Tips:

  • Make sure the printer is powered on and, for network printers, that you are connected to the campus network or Wi-Fi.
  • To set a printer as your default, go to Printers & scanners, click the printer, and choose "Set as default". If you don't see that option, first turn off "Let Windows manage my default printer" at the bottom of the Printers & scanners screen.
  • Print a test page from the printer's settings to confirm everything works.
  • Don't guess a campus printer's name - the Help Desk can give you the exact name and make sure you have access to it.
