Frequently Asked Question

How do I submit a Canvas assignment that uses Turnitin?
Last Updated 25 days ago

Some Canvas assignments run your submission through Turnitin, which checks your work for similarity against other sources. There's no separate Turnitin login at Jersey College - you submit through the Canvas assignment the same way you normally would, and Turnitin runs automatically behind the scenes. The only Turnitin-specific step is accepting a one-time agreement the first time. Here's how it works.

  1. Go to https://jerseycollege.instructure.com/login/ldap and sign in with your Jersey College username (firstname.lastname) and password.
  1. Open your course, click Assignments, and select the assignment you need to turn in. Assignments that use Turnitin usually say so in the instructions or show a Turnitin label.
  1. Click Start Assignment (or Submit Assignment) in the upper-right area, choose the File Upload tab, then click Choose File and pick your document.
  1. If a Turnitin End-User License Agreement (EULA) appears, read it and click I agree to continue. You normally only have to do this once - after that, future submissions won't ask again.
  1. Click Submit Assignment. Wait until you see a confirmation message and the submission details on the right side of the screen - that's how you know Canvas received your file.

Tips:

  • If your file won't upload, save it as a Word document (.docx) or PDF (.pdf) and try again - those are the most reliably accepted formats.
  • The Turnitin similarity report is not instant. It can take a few minutes (sometimes longer when many students submit at once) to finish, so don't worry if you don't see a score right away.
  • Submit a little early when you can. That gives you time to fix any upload problems before the due date.
  • To confirm it went through, reopen the assignment - you should see your file name and a "Submitted" status.
