Frequently Asked Question
I got a sign-in or MFA request I didn't start - what do I do?
Last Updated 25 days ago
If Microsoft Authenticator suddenly asks you to approve a sign-in, or you get a verification request, and you did NOT just try to sign in yourself, treat it as a warning sign. It can mean someone else has your password and is trying to get into your account. Here is exactly what to do.
- Do NOT approve the request. If Microsoft Authenticator shows a number to enter or asks you to approve or deny, choose Deny - or simply do not approve it. Approving would let the other person in.
- Change your password right away. As soon as you have denied the request, go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com/?whr=jerseycollege.edu and reset your password. A request you did not start usually means your current password is no longer safe.
- Contact the Jersey College Help Desk. Let us know you received a sign-in or MFA request you did not start. We can check your account and help make sure it is secure.
Tips and warnings:
- The golden rule: never approve a sign-in or MFA request you did not start. If you did not just try to log in, the request is not yours to approve.
- Repeated approval prompts that you did not trigger are a strong sign someone has your password and is trying again and again. Deny every one and change your password.
- The Help Desk will never ask you to approve a request or read back a code over the phone. If someone calls asking you to approve a prompt or share a code, hang up - it is a scam.
- Your Jersey College password covers both Microsoft 365 and Canvas. After you reset it, Canvas updates with the new password in about 5 to 10 minutes.
